We spent that week in New York City not only doing interesting things, but also exploring the city, and the people we met there. It’s always exciting to see a part of the world that we’ve never seen before. This time, though, we found it less interesting. There were certain things that occurred in the city that we had no prior memory of and were almost impossible to forget, like the sight of a police officer running down the middle of streets with a gun held to his head.
The NYPD has a very interesting history in New York City. They are known for being one of the few uniformed police forces in the United States that still carry the badge and gun on their belt. This means that they are still one of the most heavily armed and dangerous police forces in the country. They have a reputation for being unpredictable, and it’s not uncommon for them to run into trouble. They have been accused of shootings, disappearances, drug raids, and other nefarious activities.
While they have been on the upswing in the last ten or so years, the NYPD has had some pretty questionable incidents in the past. From 2002 to 2008 alone, nine officers disappeared from the job. In 2007 they were sued for excessive force by a New York man who was shot and killed by the police after running in to a car full of cops and trying to grab his gun. In 2008, the NYPD killed a young teenage girl and an unarmed black man on the same day.
While the NYPD has had a few incidents of questionable behavior, they are still relatively rare. The fact is, the NYPD has a pretty bad reputation for being a bunch of assholes who don’t care about human lives. You can’t do that job without getting into a fight or two. And when you’re on a regular patrol, you’re surrounded by cop cars, with all their guns trained on your face. So you’re pretty much guaranteed to get shot at.
So we don’t know, but as a result, the NYPD’s reputation for not caring about the lives of others is pretty much a given. And while this may seem like a minor issue, it has real consequences for people who live in areas where the police arent on-call. You dont know if your friend is going to get arrested or if youre going to get shot. That can lead to a lot of stress and frustration for people who live in those areas.
The thing about the people who live in areas where the police are not on-call, is that they have no real recourse against them. They can only fight it out in the courts, which are very slow and expensive. So if you live in an area where the police are not on-call, it is best to move out of the area as quickly as possible. Also, make sure you have your personal safety net for when the police show up.
